Overcoming Technology fears

I would say that my worst fear is the not knowing. There is so much that I do not know about technology. Therefore it makes it hard to implement technology in to your lesson, if you yourself do not totally understand. Today’s kids seem to know how to do everything. They just get on the computer and go. Today’s kids have grown up in a technology world, where as I did not. With this class I feel that I have learned so much to help prepare me when I make that move into the classroom and the integration of technology. It is one thing being able to know how to do a power point, wikis, blogs, or using google sites, but being able to teach others how to do them. Knowing how and teaching are two different things.
I want to know more and learn more about technology. There is much more out there that would be fun to learn. The thing is I don’t know enough about technology to even ask to learn about them, so I just take any skill that I can get. I ask questions when I don’t know, even if it makes me look like a fool, but that is the only way that I am going to learn. The more classes that I take that requires the use of technology or is a technology class the better off I will be when I get in the classroom. The thing is I can’t quit learning because technology is not going to stop and the kids of our future are technology based.

  1. As I've shared with others in the class, you have to begin somewhere. Begin using basic pieces of a blog, wiki, powerpoint, whatever the best tool of choice is and use it somehow in one of your classes to get familiar with its use. Don't use every piece of it, just the functions that have application for the task at hand.

Also, somehow we think we have to be perfect or all-knowing to teach. That isn't the case. You certainly are knowledgeable about the content area for which you teach, but the teaching tools constantly change. Involve the students in the learning process. True, meaningful learning occurs when students are actively involved in the learning process.

  2. You're not alone in this fear as it relates to implementing new technology. First, I would say that after determining which technology has the functions/features that you'd plan to use, you will practice it's use. Perhaps create a handout of helpful tips and/or steps.

Second, as educators we think we have to know all about all...that just isn't the case. You certainly need to be knowledgeable in the content area in which you teach. But in terms of integrating technology, you will learn much by just beginning somewhere and doing.

From what I've noted this semester, you have a great aptitude for learning and applying the technology. Step out and try it. Keep a plan B close by in case something doesn't work as you intended. Learn from the stumble and try again.

I feel the same way! When I think about it, imagine all the technologies out there. There is absolutely no way to learn about all of them. I think its fascinating to know that there is so much info out there about a certain subject, you realize you will never learn all of it. All we can do is pick up what is of interest to us, along with what we should know in order to help everyone around us. Who knows, maybe everything will interest us after all:)

About Me

My photo
I live in Rockwall, Tx. and have been teaching Physical Education for 15 years. I have taught in Mesquite for the last 9 years. I decided that I would get my Masters in Library Science so here I am going in a totaly different direction in my life. I have a daughter who is 12 going on 22, but who is the love of my life. She plays select soccer in Dallas and I spend all of my time carting her all over creation to games, practice and tournaments. My time is her "social life". Before soccer she showed horses and we were on the road to horse shows. She was very good at that as well, but had to make a choice between the two when she went select and so she chose soccer. Besides my daughter I have 5 dogs, 2 cats and 2 horses that I share my life with.
